The State of Georgia requires all drivers to have accident liability insurance for each of the vehicles they own. The required car insurance for Georgia will protect you from medical payments of the injured and it shall also pay for the damages to properties due to the accident. The minimum requirement of coverages are $25,000 per person for bodily injury per accident, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury to two or more people and $25,000 per accident for property damage.

All insurance companies are now required by the State of Georgias Department of Revenue to submit all policy information of their consumers electronically. The information is then stored in the states database. In other words, as soon as you purchase your car insurance for Georgia, all information about your insurance is reported to the Department of Revenue. In fact, when it is stored in the database, you can then check the status of your policy online. You can and should verify the coverage is properly documented. To do this, you have to give your title number and your vehicle identification number. You can find the numbers in your vehicle registration papers. However, you should remember that if you have just recently purchased your insurance, the insurance companies are given 30 days to submit the data so you may not find your policy in the data yet.

You should have your insurance identification card or copy of the declarations page of your policy in the vehicle at all times. In case of an accident or if you are pulled over by the officer of the law, you must present your proof of car insurance coverage, meaning your  insurance card or copy of declarations.

In case of policy cancellation or lapses, you will have to pay the penalties and the registration of your vehicle may also be suspended. In case of lapses, you will have to pay the lapse fee of $25 and the additional $60 for reinstatement fee.
