The State of Idaho requires car insurance for Idaho drivers, and anyone else operating registered or unregistered motorized vehicles to have at least liability car insurance coverage. The minimum coverage requirement of the state is $25,000 for injury or death of one person, $50,000 for injury or death of two or more people and $15,000 for property damage. The coverage shall pay for all the medical expenses as well as for the repairs and replacement of property, such as the vehicle of the other party, incurred from the accident.

Before you can register your vehicle in Idaho, you must certify that the vehicle is insured and will continue to be insured according to the Idaho Code, Sections 49-117(18) and 49-1229. Unlike in other states where showing proof of insurance is required to register your vehicle, in Idaho you are not required to do so. In case the DMV requests for your proof of insurance, if you do not have a proof of insurance card with you, you can get an SR-22 certificate from your car insurance provider and use that as a proof of insurance. In case you get into an accident and caused death, personal injury and damage to property, you can use this as proof of your financial responsibility.

If you fail to show proof of insurance, under Idahos no-insurance laws, you will then be required to show proof of financial responsibility for a year. That is if you are a first time offender. If you are a second time offender, you are then required to show proof of financial responsibility for three years.

Idaho has a Tort system which means that in case of accidents, the responsible driver must be established. Their insurance is then responsible for the damages from that accident. This is the reason why additional coverages, such as the uninsured/underinsured coverage are recommended by insurance providers to all motorists.
