Driving uninsured in the State of Indiana is against the law. Indiana requires that all drivers must pay for all the costs in an accident for which they are responsible. This means that the driver found responsible for accident they have the financial responsibility of paying for everything related to the accident. You can show your proof of financial responsibility a few different ways one is by having a cash or security deposit of $40,000 or by filing for a certificate or bond of self insurance. Or, you can have liability car insurance coverage. The required minimum liability insurance coverage is $25,000 for one person per injury and $10,000 for property insurance.
In the State of Indiana, you are required to show proof of financial coverage if you receive ticket for traffic violations or if you are involved in a motor vehicle accident. In the event of an accident, the state police will receive a report from the police officer who responded to the accident. Then the report is sent to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles or BMV. You will then be sent a certificate of compliance to prove your financial responsibility if you or your insurance company failed to provide the information to the BMV. Upon issuance of the certificate, you are then given 40 days to complete the certificate. The certificate shall be completed by your insurance company and return it to the BMV.
The same applies if you got convicted of a traffic offense and had a moving violation, two moving traffic offenses in the past 12 months or if your license was suspended for failure to provide proof of financial responsibility. You should also keep in mind that the BMV will send the certificate to your address on your license so it is your responsibility to inform them if you have changed your address. If you fail to provide the BMV with the certificate, your license will be suspended and you will also have to pay the fee for reinstatement when you decided you would like to drive legally again.
