The State of Louisiana requires that drivers have proof of insurance when driving on the roads of Louisiana and when registering a vehicle. Another proof of car insurance that is acceptable is a statement written by your insurance company or agent. The letter should be properly written, meaning it should be on the insurance providers letterhead, it should be duly signed and it should have all the information about your vehicle and your coverage. You should be careful about the letter because any false information can result in additional problems in the future.

The State is strict about its insurance regulations. If you provide false information about your insurance, you will have to pay the fine and serve time in jail. Needless to say, your registration will also be suspended. If you are caught driving without proof of car insurance, your vehicle will be impounded and the officer will take your license plate. You will then be given three days in which to show your proof of insurance. If you fail to do so, you will have to register your vehicle again since they will destroy your license plate by then.
