New Jersey requires drivers to carry liability car insurance, personal injury protection (PIP) and uninsured motorist coverage to meet minimum requirements. There are two types of polices available in New Jersey, the standard car insurance and the basic car insurance. To comply with the requirements of the state, you can choose one of the two.

The standard car insurance for New Jersey includes bodily injury liability, property damage liability, personal injury protection (PIP), uninsured motorist coverage and underinsured motorist coverage. The minimum for the bodily injury is $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident. For the property damage, the minimum is $5,000 per accident while the personal injury is $15,000 per person or accident. The uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is available up to the liability amounts. The basic car insurance for New Jersey, which was designed to make car insurance available to all, meets only the states minimum requirements. It consists of $5,000 property damage liability per accident and $15,000 PIP per person per accident.

New Jersey requires drivers to carry their car insurance card and present it to law enforcement when requested. Your New Jersey car insurance provider will issue you your New Jersey Insurance Identification card upon purchase of car insurance for your vehicle. If you fail to present your insurance card, you will have to pay a fine. If you are caught driving an uninsured vehicle, you will also have to pay the fine, and possibly have your drivers license suspended, you will have to pay the insurance surcharges and you may have to do community service.

Never provide a New Jersey car insurance company false information when submitting your application or when making a claim since it will be considered car insurance fraud. You may then be incarcerated for fraud, lose your license and  have to pay the civil fine of $15,000 for every violation.
