Under the North Dakota 39-08-20 Century Code, all vehicle owners must have car insurance coverage. It is illegal to drive an uninsured vehicle on the streets, roads and highways of North Dakota. North Dakota requires minimum car insurance coverage of $25,000 for bodily injury or death of one person per accident, $50,000 bodily injury or death of two or more persons per accident and $25,000 for injury to or destruction of property of others per accident. For the uninsured motorist coverage, the minimum requirement is $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. The same is for the underinsured, the minimum requirement is $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. The basic no fault or personal injury protection (PIP) minimum requirement is $30,000.
Car insurance for North Dakota must also be purchased from state-authorized insurance providers. Once you have purchased your car insurance, the company will send you your insurance identification card. This insurance card shall then be your proof of insurance. You must have this with you when you are behind the wheel. In the event of an accident, stopped for a traffic violation or stopped at a check point by an officer, you will be requested to present your proof of insurance. You will be penalized if you fail to present your proof of insurance.
If you are caught driving without car insurance for North Dakota for the first time, you will have to pay the amount of $150 as fine. You will also be slapped with six to twelve points on your driving record. If you are caught driving without car insurance for the second time within an 18-month period, you will have to pay the fine of $300 and have the same amount of points added to your driving record.
