The State of Pennsylvania requires that all vehicle owners maintain financial responsibility or vehicle liability insurance. If you fail to maintain financial responsibility, your license may be suspended and in case of an accident, you might end up bankrupt. The required minimum liability car insurance for Pennsylvania is $15,000 for injury or death of one person in an accident, $30,000 for injury or death of more than one person in an accident and $5,000 for damage to property of another person.

After you have purchased your Pennsylvania car insurance, the insurance company will send you your insurance identification card. You must keep the card with you whenever you are driving in Pennsylvania. In the event of an accident, you will be required to present your proof of car insurance to the police officer. When asked, you are also required to present the card to an officer of the law when you are stopped for traffic violation or for vehicle check.

If you are caught driving without insurance, you will have to pay $300. At the same time, your drivers license mayl be suspended for three months. You will then have to pay the amount of $50 for reinstatement. Your vehicle registration will also be suspended for three months and again you will have to pay the reinstatement fee of $50. For the duration of your suspension, your vehicle is also banned from being driven by anyone.

If your car insurance lapses, your insurance provider will inform the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation of the lapse. The PennDOT will then request you the information of your new car insurance carrier. If you fail to respond to the PennDOT request, your drivers license will be suspended. You should also bring your proof of insurance during inspection because if you fail to bring your proof of insurance for Pennsylvania, your car will not be inspected and the station will also notify the PennDOT. Lastly, you cannot register your vehicle without the required proof of insurance.
